The objective is to illustrate the delight of working as a team and to participate with others in a friendly environment learning to craft DogWork Presentations. This beginning class will teach movement concepts and suggest ways for each team to build a movement vocabulary. Also taught will be basic choreography to begin crafting the DogWork Presentation. This class will be incorporated into the Rally and CGC classes. This class is designed to teach you how to train your dog skills beyond the traditional obedience repetoir. This class is particularly helpful for those dogs and handlers who have already mastered some basic obedience skills and who would like to enhance further their relationship and mutual learning. As we go, we will be specifically training the skills that are a part of AKC’s trick dog program. Consequently, if handlers would like, they may also obtain the AKC’s titles that go along with the trick dog program. Regardless, developing these skills with your dog will enhance your dog’s fitness, communication skills, resilience in the face of new challenges, and his relationship with his handler. For non-weavers, we will begin with Susan Garrett’s 2x2 method for finding entries with confidence. Once the dog understands finding entries, we will begin adding poles and gradually adjusting pole position to help the dog learn to weave six in-line poles. For dogs already weaving six or twelve in-line poles, we will focus on difficult entries, creating obstacle independence, adding speed, crosses before and after poles, proofing with distractions, and staying in the poles. To prevent over-training and dog fatigue, we will intersperse weave practice with skills such as hand touch, opposition reflex, restrained recalls, directionals, backing up, and body awareness. Course material and methods will pull heavily from Susan Garrett and other resources to find solutions to individual weave issues.

This course is six weeks, three weeks at OCC on Mondays at 6:15-7:15 pm and the final three weeks at a farm on Fridays at 6:00 pm. The Farm Dog class will prepare you to take the AKC Farm Dog Certified test. We will practice twelve exercises: greeting a judge, performing a walking pattern around a farm environment, jumping on a hay or a straw bale, walking by farm animals, walking over and through unusual surfaces, remaining calmly in a supervised separation, passing through a gate, feeding livestock while the dog waits in a controlled position, heeling calmly past another dog, being composed around noise distractions, approaching livestock, and quietly allowing for a physical examination. Farm Dog class will represent situations a farm dog would encounter in a typical farm environment. The basic test requirements are designed to demonstrate the self-control and obedience, which are necessary and vital for the welfare of both the dog and the livestock. It is also intended to show the dog’s ability to cope appropriately with potentially unique environments. These traits and foundational training are vital to a working farm dog as well as to the welfare of the livestock. This class provides an opportunity for the dogs to apply their basic training in a novel environment, demonstrating their natural capability and trainability to work in partnership with their human companions. What you need to bring: your dog; a four to six foot leash; a secure, well-fitting, flat collar; a can-do attitude and a spirit for adventure!
